01.18.16 - 2015 Toyota Camry

For every comparison test you have to have a baseline to start from and decide what you want to base your test on. For this particular test you might think we chose some really strange item, but what we chose was the time to sixty mph of the 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 which came in at a time of 6.5 seconds. The funny part is all the cars on this list would be considered to be boring cars but they are great for driving and come in with faster times to sixty mph than the old Shelby.

Chevrolet ImpalaThe Impala is one of the most typical sedans on the road and gives us a look and feel that some of us enjoy, but for the most part it can be considered a boring car. This car is one that makes the run up and down the I-95 corridor on a regular basis and has been a sales leader, but not one that entices a lot of excitement. Even though you might consider this a boring car this car can make the run to sixty mph in 6.0 seconds with the use of the V6 engine that makes for a more fun way to drive.

Acura MDXThe luxury brand from Honda offers some of the most boring vehicles on the road, but also some of the most enjoyably luxurious when you get inside. The MDX is one of the leaders in the market for sales giving us a reason to look at this SUV even though it’s one that has been around for a long time. The MXD is capable and a good road vehicle and its actually quick as well; fast enough to reach sixty mph in only 5.9 seconds which is an excellent feat.

Toyota Camry XSEIf the Prius is typically the butt of the car jokes the Camry is not far behind at all. The Camry is one of the most sold cars on the road, but it’s not exciting at all. The Camry is a car that can easily be described as boring and is sold more than any other sedan on the road today. Using the V6 in this model of the Camry you can have the quickness you won’t expect as this car can make the run to sixty mph in only 5.8 seconds to be a quietly enjoyable ride.

Ford Edge SportTo even think of the Edge as anything more than a typical SUV from Ford you have to go to the Sport trim. In fact the lower trim levels will take more than eight seconds to reach sixty mph which is a lot more than our threshold. When you choose the Sport trim the Ford Edge is still particularly basic but it’s a lot quicker than the base model. This higher trim level is so much quicker that it will actually make the run to sixty mph in only 5.6 seconds making it more fun to drive.

Ford F-150 3.5L EcoBoost V6Don’t you need a V8 for a truck? It seems like Ford forgot this part or they just chose to put a smaller engine inside this truck. If boring means a sales leader, the F-150 certainly gets the job done and has some of the best sales on the market. While most might not think of this as a fast vehicle, the F-150 with this engine setup can actually make the run to sixty mph on only 5.6 seconds to be one of the quickest trucks ever put on the road which was only made quicker with the aluminum intensive shell.

Honda Accord EX-L V6If the Camry is boring, the Accord is super boring. This is a car that some look at as sportier than the Camry and others think it’s more like a blah vehicle with very few refinements. The fun for the Accord comes in at the V6 engine model that gives you more power and a greater ability to have some fun on the road. This car will be able to hit the sixty mph mark in a quick 5.6 seconds to make it a bit more dynamic to drive.

GMC Yukon DenaliThe GMC Yukon might not normally be considered boring at all, but it’s really still just a large box on wheels that has very little body styling and attractive features to make it special. The Yukon comes with two different engine choices and if you want an engine that is going to make this big beast quick you need to upgrade to the 420 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine for the Denali which is able to haul a boat or a large load where you need it to go while also having the ability to reach sixty mph in only 5.5 seconds.

While this may seem like an odd comparison to make you do see the point here that some of these vehicles that we see in our daily lives that could possibly be boring are also some that offer a great deal of excitement from under the hood. Next time you see any one of these vehicles on the road you can think about whether or not they have an upgraded powertrain above the base model for the owner to love the drive and be able to reach speed quickly.
