You have to admire how much automakers love to squeeze everything they can out of a particular platform. When a specific build works for a car often you see the same company use the build to create a great crossover SUV or another car. By doing this automakers are able to build more vehicles without the need to retool on a regular basis. Instead they can simply create a new body structure but use the same basic dimensions to give us a vehicle we want to drive and enjoy.

The fact that Alfa Romeo is already using the Giulia architecture to create a new SUV shows us they have had these plans in the works from the beginning and why now. The dimensions of the Giulia are perfect for a great new SUV to be built on and even the engine lineup will work perfectly as well. It also helps that many new SUVs that are built off existing car platforms are of the compact or subcompact version which means they aren’t much larger than their sedan or coupe counterparts except maybe when it comes to ride height and the overall size of the cabin of the vehicle.

For Alfa Romeo, using the Giulia platform they will show us a new SUV concept in the fall of this year. That means we may see this new vehicle showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which is the same show the Giulia was debuted at in 2015 when the Giulia Quadrifoglio was first presented to the public. This new SUV is to be called the Stelvio and will have the same platform as the Giulia to give us a somewhat larger vehicle that carries in the same drivetrain and performance numbers as the Giulia.

The Stelvio will be offered in RWD and FWD and offers a 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder engine, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and the 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 that is offered on the Quadrifoglio that brings in 510 horsepower to give us the massive power variant. The question with the new Stelvio will be to find out if it will offer AWD. As an SUV this would certainly be a benefit to the vehicle and a great selling point even if owners will never even need AWD for the driving the choose to do with their new Alfa Romeo SUV.

Its impressive the Giulia is already being used for an SUV and that we will see this new vehicle in the fall of this year when the Giulia still hasn’t made it to market yet. Hopefully the Stelvio won’t take nearly as long to come to market as the Giulia has so far. Regardless of how long it takes, the fact that Alfa Romeo is ready to debut this new vehicle marks significant strides in the brand name and planned lineup to be able to embrace an SUV and the need to compete with some of the other high end automakers and their SUV variants.
