The expanse of highway that we enjoy in the US which allows us to drive from one ocean to the other in a matter of days or weeks calls us to enjoy a drive across the country. We as Americans feel like the roads have always been part of our country along with the availability of the various industries that are needed in order to ensure we can enjoy a great road trip to many of the areas around the country. While we enjoy the road and know it’s there for us to use, many people from other parts of the world have never experienced travel the way we enjoy it.

Even if you took a road trip across Europe you wouldn’t reach the same expanses of openness that are offered in the US. In many parts of the world taking a road trip is simply not possible and you would find yourself frustrated and unable to do much more than turn back if your only mode of transportation was your vehicle. For this reason many foreigners enjoy the openness of our roads and the ability to travel at speeds with nothing but the farms on either side of the road and a road the appears to disappear into the horizon.

We didn’t always have the roads that are so much a part of our country today. the movement of settlers to the Western part of the country led to discovery and expansion of the nation as did some of the purchases that were made to allow the country to be shaped in the way it is today. Eventually the roads that were carved by horse and carriage leading from one small town to another with a few large cities in between would need to be paved to allow travel by automobile.

Early vehicles such as the Model T were built to handle the horse trails that were still a large part of the American landscape in the early part of the automobile industry. Not only did vehicles have to be developed that would operate well on roads, but roads had to be built to allow safe passage. The need for carving the landscape with roads has even meant cutting roads through mountains and over rivers to make sure we can drive more efficiently and effectively from one part of the country to another without the need of any other mode of travel.

It does help that our obsession with road trips can take us across the country to see a variety of amazing sights along the way. it’s easy enough enjoy the fact that we can turn on the radio, pull out onto the open road and put some miles under the wheels of the car as we make our way across the openness that is America to whatever destination we have in mind. If a road trip is in your future, enjoy it, savor it and appreciate it, knowing not everyone can experience a road trip the same way we can here in America.
