Recalls aren’t fun for anyone and most of the time we see recalls on newer models of vehicles because an issue is discovered soon after the vehicle is put to market, but sometimes older models have the need for recalls as well. Recently Mazda announced it has the need to recall 190,102 Mazda CX-7 models due to an issue with the ball join fittings in the front of the vehicle. This recall affects vehicles built between February 14, 2006 and May 9, 2012 and should be taken extremely seriously by those who own one of these affected models of the CX-7.

What can happen in these vehicles is the ball joints can end up with water between the fittings which can cause rust and corrosion of the joints which can then cause separation of the lower control arms. This has been found to be a problem in states where weather is most likely to be bad and salt has been used on the roads to help melt the snow during the winter months. If the lower control arms separate from the suspension you won’t be able to steer your vehicle, which means you may be in for an adventure you weren’t prepared for while driving your CX-7.

So far there hasn’t been any report of this issue resulting in any injuries, collisions or deaths, but it is a recall that needs to be taken care of right away. If you happen to own an affected vehicle you should bring your vehicle to your local Mazda dealer for the repair to be completed. The Mazda service center technicians will replace both of the front lower control arms at no charge to you to ensure you can hit the road again safely. Of course, you do need to be on the list as a priority in order to be served right away.

Because affected vehicles are going to be worse for the oldest models and in areas where the weather is the worst, the first vehicles serviced will be those with 2007 models and then in succession through the years to 2011 models. The states that will be served first include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

If you don’t live in one of these areas or have a 2012 model that’s part of the recall your vehicle will be on list to be serviced as parts become available. The recall notices for these vehicles will begin to be mailed out around October 10 to help owners be able to bring their vehicles in to have these parts fixed and know they can get back on the road with no issues in sight. As far as recalls go, this one is pretty serious as no one driving around you wants your CX-7 to suddenly lose the ability to steer. If you receive a recall notice, please make sure you take your vehicle in for this service right away.
