The future is in connected vehicles and the ability to have cars make their way toward being able to offer us the look, feel and information we need. The information that cars are becoming equipped with is the most important aspect of what makes the future of what we can expect from our vehicles, including the importance of the operating systems and connectivity these vehicles are going to give us for the future. For this reason, many automakers, including Hyundai, are working to have connected systems that will provide the communication we will need for autonomous technology.

Not only do automakers need to create systems that work on the cars we have today, they have to predict the future and what the connectivity will be in five or ten years. For this reason, Hyundai Motor has begun to accelerate the development of their advanced connected car Operating System (ccOS) to create a platform that will be viable now and in the future. This development will make it easier than ever for the Hyundai vehicles we love, like the Tucson compact SUV, to be equipped with upgradeable technology and the Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) features that will make it possible for these vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and the world around them.

The program has begun with the establishment of the Infotainment Software Development Team in the Namyang Research and Development Center. This center and this team are dedicated to bringing the ccOS system to the Hyundai line of vehicles that will make a huge difference in the overall program development for us. The vision of Hyundai is called its “Car for Life” vision that will have a hub of infinite knowledge that will make the car a huge part of the daily life of owners with more connected ways to provide information on what we need.

This type of lifestyle program is already in place with some luxury car companies, but Hyundai will be the first of the mainstream companies to bring this technology to the market when it does. The lifestyle aspect of the technology is only the first piece, because that can be delivered now, but the V2V and V2I programs are part of the future which will bring about the ability to move toward autonomous capabilities at affordable prices. The tech that’s being developed is expected to rival even the upgradability that Tesla has, giving Hyundai an Over the Air (OTA) upgrade capability we haven’t had on the market yet.

With this development for a brand of vehicles that will be both luxury with the new Genesis brand and mainstream with the Hyundai brand, we’re going to see an impressive way of vehicular communication going forward. As this program develops the plan is to bring the technology to the market and have more of what we need in the cars we drive on a daily basis. It’s easy to see how Hyundai is moving the needle when it comes to the technology development of the future.
