Every single year Wards Auto announces the best engines for the upcoming year. As you can imagine there have always been some high powered V8 models and even some impressive V6 power plants that make the cut. As the trend in the recent engine technology continues to advance, we see that power is coming from a smaller block of metal that’s being aided by forced induction or direct fuel injection. For the first time in over two decades, a V8 did not make the cut, but a turbo V6 is on the list to make up for the loss of the larger engines. Check out these power plants that made it to the top of the list:

BMW M240i – 3.0L Turbocharged DOHC I6 – This beauty offers up 335 horsepower to make a great way to drive and enjoy the ride from this power push. This engine is smooth, full of energy and ready to give you the ride you want from under the hood. This is a great choice for you if you’re shopping for a new BMW this year.

Chevrolet Volt – 1.5L DOHC 4-cyl/Dual Motor EREV – The Volt has become one of the favorite among cars that can travel a distance on only electric power and the 53 miles this car boasts ins one of the best ranges we’ve seen. This engine produces an impressive 294 lb.-ft. of torque form the electric motor while a scant 101 horsepower form the gasoline engine.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid – 3.6L DOHC V6/Dual Motor PHEV – This new minivan is technologically advanced in many ways and one of this is in the engine bat. this engine will give you 33 miles of electric range but an impressive 566 miles of total range using the Atkinson-cycle in this V6 engine which helps make this one of the most efficient engines on the market.

Ford Focus RS – 2.3L Turbocharged DOHC 4-cyl – Here you have an engine that produces insane power in a small car to be the power you want. This little hatchback enjoys the benefit of 350 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque for you to have the ride you want in an AWD platform. This is certainly an engine worth of this list.

Honda Accord Hybrid – 2.0L DOHC 4-cyl/Dual Motor HEV – start with the engine that uses the Atkinson-cycle and continue with the small motor that provides electricity for the traction motor. The total output is 212 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque to give you a great ride. This is the only conventional hybrid to make the cut on this list.

Hyundai Elantra Eco – 1.4L Turbocharged DOHC 4-cyl – This isn’t a hybrid engine, but it does give you the fuel mileage the feels a lot like a hybrid for you to enjoy the ride. You’ll only have 128 horsepower with this engine, but it will feel like a lot more and you’ll love the way the seven-speed dual clutch transmission helps this engine perform.

Infiniti Q50 – 3.0L Turbocharged DOHC V6- This engine is a bit of a surprise, but it does provide 400 horsepower and offers new engine technology that makes it a great engine that may make this list year after year. If you want one that’s more efficient, its offered with 300 horsepower instead to give you the ability to enjoy the fuel efficiency you want.

Mazda CX-9 – 2.5L Turbocharged DOHC 4-cyl – This engine actually moves into a seven seater vehicle that offers you the power you want and the efficiency you’ve been searching for. This engine offers you 227 horsepower if you use regular unleaded or 250 horsepower if you push the gas cost up to 93 octane fuel for your ride.

Mercedes-Benz C300 – 2.0L Turbocharged DOHC 4-cyl – While the 2.0-liter engine has become a staple of the automotive market this one is one of the most impressive you’ll find. This engine offers you 241 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque for this small car that will power the car you want to enjoy on the road.

Volvo V60 Polestar – 2.0L Turbo/Supercharged DOHC 4-cyl – The beauty of this engine is its being used across the entire Volvo lineup in one way or another. This great engine brings you a full 362 horsepower to be one of the most efficient and powerful engines anywhere to show other automakers that will give you a better way to build an engine.
