The Mazda brand hasn’t been one that has been quick to embrace the hybrid or EV powertrains in the past, and the future might not see a ton of electrified vehicles offered by this brand.
However, the future of Mazda powertrains might offer us a system that’s just as efficient or more environmentally friendly than the electric models we see on the road today. It seems that Mazda may feel like we’re being fooled into thinking that EV models are better for the environment in every way than the gasoline-powered engines that currently reside under most of our hoods.
The new program that Mazda has begun is being called well-to-wheel which is expected to adopt a different evaluation of how much it costs in effect to the environment for each vehicle. Considering the fact that an EV model needs to use around 20 kWh of electricity for a specific distance of driving in a midsize EV, the translation can be made as to how much power at a coal plant is needed to create the electricity for this charge. Currently, that translation to gasoline or natural gas of this power and what the Mazda engines use make it possible that Mazda vehicles are more environmentally friendly.
Is this an Argument You Can Trust
Whether you have a Mazda vehicle powered by a SkyActiv-G or SkyActiv-X engine under the hood, the fact is these engines make use of gasoline for the power desired and the drive needed. This is why the team at Mazda is calling this new comparison the well-to-wheel evaluation. The new compression ignition engine is able to make huge gains in efficiency to ensure you can have the ride you want that you can feel good about when you drive but is that where the comparison should end.
It seems the argument is one you can trust because the efficiency of the Mazda engines is based on continued use in much the same way you would continue to make use of an EV or hybrid mode. While the SkyActiv-X engine will debut next year, it will only be a precursor to the EV mode that Mazda has been working on that might use the rotary-range extender for the drive. It will be extremely interesting to see what the well-to-wheel comparison will be once this powertrain makes its way under the hood of the models we enjoy driving.
The plans will continue from Mazda to bring a mild-hybrid model to the market in 2019 and then a plug-in hybrid by 2025. The introduction of the SkyActiv-X engine is aiding the continued development of the hybrid models that will be part of the future of this brand. by 2030, the goal is to have the well-to-wheel average lower the emissions by fifty percent and another ninety percent by 2050. It appears Mazda is well on its way to offer us the hybrids we expect, even if they are a bit later to the program that other brands. These new Mazda powertrains will certainly give us what we want for the drive.
