While the Tesla Model X was on the market most of 2016, this is the first opportunity to review this amazing vehicle and its certainly one that has what we want where it should be. If you’re familiar with Tesla you know this is an EV model that doesn’t have any type of backup program at all. Not only is the an SUV that’s a fully EV model, and the first of its kind on the market, it’s a vehicle that offers you three rows of seats and a range that will blow you away.
The Model X comes with 230 miles of range from its electric power plant and ever brings you the benefit of the Tesla Autopilot system which is a semi-autonomous driving system that feels like it can take over the car for miles and miles. There are three trim levels offered and this is the first vehicle of its kind with power Falcon Wing doors in the rear while the front ones are your standard doors. This is a gorgeous and impressive SUV that gives you the midsized feel you want with the acceleration that will blow you away.
There isn’t anything else like the Model X on the market today and the aim of Tesla was to create something special and new for us to drive. This impressive SUV offers the benefit of the Ludicrous Mode which gives you an impressive boost of power and immediate acceleration at the push of a button. This allows the SUV to reach sixty mph in 3.3 seconds in the 90D models and 2.9 seconds when in the P100D version. The Autopilot offers you a vehicle that can almost drive itself using the impressive system of cameras and sensor that are mounted in places where they make sense for this vehicle.
The power for this vehicle comes from one system that can be set up three different ways. This system is a set of AC electric motors that are setup with different sized battery packs which are built into the floor of the Model X. All three models use the same single speed transmission and are set up in AWD to give you the most control possible. The batteries can be charged in about eight hours on a 240V socket, in five hours using a 72-amp connector and in one hour at one of the Tesla Supercharging stations.
The three trims are the 75D, 90D and P100D. The 75D has a 75 kWh battery pack and offers up 328 horsepower and 387 lb.-ft. of torque with an estimated range of 237 miles. For the 90D the power is a 90-kWh battery pack that gives you 417 horsepower and 485 lb.-ft. of torque while providing 257 miles of range. At the top level the P100D offers a 100-kWh battery pack a full 532 horsepower with 713 lb.-ft. of torque and a range of nearly 289 miles.
Even at the base model the Model X comes well-equipped with a navigation system, LED headlights, power folding and heated outside mirrors, keyless entry, the power Falcon Wing rear doors, a power rear liftgate and a two-row/ five-seat configuration. You also get an eight-year warranty on the battery with no mileage limit and a four-year/50,000 mile warranty on the rest of the vehicle. Moving up the trims you can add more seating to have up to seven passengers comfortably fit inside and certainly you can add more power. There is a Subzero Weather Package which adds seat heaters, a heated steering wheel and wiper blade defrosters. You can also opt for the 17-speaker audio system, a towing package and other premium upgrades.
The Tesla Model X is a new SUV to the market that has dropped the idea of the gasoline engine altogether. Tesla has the solution for our driving needs and has come up with an enjoyable luxury SUV that offers excellent range and plenty of power to give us the fun we want on the road. The only question is whether or not this SUV is for you.
