These Models Can Haul Almost Anything
Some people think of SUVs exclusively as family vehicles, but the right model can do far more than haul kids and groceries. These three reliable used SUVs also have exceptional towing power, making them far more versatile.
There are a lot of used SUVs available in today’s market, so buyers need a clear idea of what they need. It’s rarely the case that buyers care about just one feature, but thankfully, the three SUVs described below are great at more than just towing trailers.
1. Ford Expedition
The Ford Expedition has been a popular full-size SUV since its initial release in the 1990s. With the right trailering package, it can tow up to 9,300 lbs, and buyers looking for used SUVs can often find models with 4WD to maximize the Expedition’s utility and versatility.
The Expedition has been in its fourth generation since 2018. These newer models feature Ford’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine. Modern Expeditions get an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
The 2021 Ford Expedition is one of the best used SUVs available. The Expedition went through a mid-cycle refresh in 2022, so these older models may not have all the same modern tech, but they’ll offer excellent value for the money.
2. Chevrolet Tahoe
The Chevrolet Tahoe isn’t the largest full-size SUV on the market, though it still boasts seating for nine. With the EcoTec3 V8 engine, which became available in 2015 with the fourth generation of these popular SUVs, the Chevrolet Tahoe can tow up to 7,900 lbs.
The Chevy Tahoe can’t beat the Ford Expedition in terms of trailering capacity or fuel economy. Even the fifth-generation Tahoes max out at 14 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. However, these performance-oriented SUVs provide a well-rounded driving experience.
Replete with amenities and tech features, the modern Tahoe is versatile enough to tow cargo trailers, campers, and small vehicles. Models from 2016 on are also known for their reliability. Avoid used SUVs from 2015, as this year was the first of a new generation and had a high recall count.
3. Nissan Armada
Although the Nissan Armada hasn’t been around quite as long as the Chevy Tahoe or the Ford Expedition, it’s still a top contender regarding towing capacity. It sits between the Expedition and the Tahoe and has a max tow capacity of 8,500 lbs.
It should come as no surprise that the Armada is a little more rugged than the Tahoe. This three-row, full-size SUV is much larger and heavier. Despite the extra weight, it has comparable fuel efficiency at an EPA-estimated 16 mpg combined.
Drivers looking for solid used SUVs at a reasonable price point may want to consider the first-generation 2009 Nissan Armada. It’s reliable, features a 317 hp 5.6L V8 engine, and has a higher towing capacity than modern models at 9,000 lbs.
