When you think about McLaren what comes to mind? Insanely aerodynamic style that shows off amazing style to produce some of the fastest supercars on the market; if that would be your thought; you would be right in the ballpark of what McLaren is all about. This is one of the few companies that started as a racing team and then became a production company, which is the reverse of what typically takes place. This company has until recently been similar to some other supercar companies, offering only a few models without expanding the lineup too far.
Even though the number of McLaren cars has been limited, the company has dabbled in expanding the lineup and recently announced a new development and business plan. This plan will be called the Track22 plant and its one that we should all pay attention to. Let’s look at some of the features of this plan and see where the excitement lies.
First of all, the successor to the P1, which is going to be extremely difficult to beat, could be a hybrid hypercar. Not only could it be hybrid powered, we have seen this song and dance already in the Porsche 918, but it has the potential to be a plug-in variation and not just a hybrid but a full on EV. That would be amazing for the market and follow in line with much of what has been presented already at the Geneva Motor Show where we say several new EV models that are supercars as well.
If that was where the excitement ended we wouldn’t have much to discuss, but there is certainly much more for us to realize and learn from. Did you notice the LT at the end of the 675LT name? That is actually part of the sub-brand that McLaren has developed to give us some limited-production coupe and spider models that will continually whet our appetite for the exotic supercar name of McLaren. Using this sub-brand McLaren has announced they will develop fifteen all new models or models that are a derivative of existing ones such as the 675LT.
With all this development you might wonder what will happen to the 3.8-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine that has been the steadfast performer for the brand. The answer to this question is nothing will happen to it. This power plant will soldier on as the basis for the powertrains developed whether they are gas-powered or hybrid versions. Imagine the possibilities with this engine continuing to be the perfect mate to any of the different models developed; now you can see where McLaren is headed.
This news from McLaren is exciting and certainly appears to be what we want to see from a car company that has found its way to favor and success in the supercar world. Does this mean the models will become any less expensive? Probably not, but if you think about it, you really don’t want them to, this way you and your kids can dream of driving a McLaren and someday make it a reality.
