When you get in and drive your car the one item you count on to keep you safer than any other is your seat belt. If this item fails to perform the way you expect it to, you could be in danger of losing your life. This is the problem many cars with the Ford name on them are facing right now, which has caused the automaker to issue a recall on over 680,000 vehicles that need to be checked to make sure the seat belt will perform properly and give you the safety you expect, even when you have an accident.
This recall affects models of the Ford Fusion from 2013-2016, the Lincoln MKZ from 2013-2015 and Ford Mondeo models from 2015 and 2016. The problem with the seat belts is that the pre-tensioners, once deployed, can cause cables to break. If these cables break the seat belt might not hold people and can cause injuries or death. So far there are two known injuries that have been caused by this problem in these cars. If you own one of these vehicles from these model years you’ll need to make sure you have your vehicle inspected and repaired if needed.
The pre-tensioner of the seat belt tightens it when the car is stopping and help to keep you in place in your seat during that process. In order to fix this problem, dealers will inject insulation into the pre-tensioner to protect the cable from the heat that can cause them to break. This will be done at no cost to you as the owner of the vehicle. Most of these cars in the recall are in the US, Canada and Mexico. If your vehicle is on this recall list, the recall will begin on January 16th and you should receive written notification from Ford.
