Hyundai Motor Group, as the owner of the Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia brands, tends to have some overlap in the vehicles it manufactures. Take the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage, for example:
Both are compact SUVs with some of the same technology because Hyundai Motor Group provides standard features for all of its vehicles. So what would make them stand out if you found them in a Kia or Hyundai dealer’s showroom?
Exterior, Interior, and Engine Specs
Externally, the Hyundai Tuscon and Kia Sportage look very similar -a classic, smooth SUV style with small backseat windows and a large trunk door. If not for their size, you may be unable to tell the difference between them at first glance at a Kia or Hyundai dealer!
The Tuscon was redesigned for 2022 and has more interior space for comfortable passenger seating, even though both SUVs seat five. It also has more cargo space than the Sportage by almost 10 feet -the Sportage already has below-average cargo space compared to other vehicles in its class.
Both SUVs have similar engines -a 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the Tuscon and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder in the Sportage -and have FWD standard. The difference between the two comes from their transmissions -the Sportage has a six-speed automatic, while the Tuscon has an eight-speed.
Trims and Pricing
The Tuscon has four trims in its 2022 model: the SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited. They range in price from $25,000 to $37,000. The Sportage also has four trims: the LX, Nightfall, EX, and SX Turbo. These trims range in price from $24,000 to $35,000.
The SX Turbo trim of the Kia Sportage has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and the Nightfall has special badging and black roof rails and wheels. So not only does the Kia Sportage come out cheaper, it has more specialized trims!
Features and Safety
The base trim of both SUVs includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, six speakers spread throughout the vehicle, and at least one USB port. Standard safety features include lane departure warnings, emergency braking, a pre-collision safety system, and a remote anti-theft alarm system.
What makes the Tuscon stand out is the availability of tech and safety features at higher trims -each trim above standard includes more features than you can count. In contrast, the Kia Sportage doesn’t have as many technological advancements, even at higher price points.
Both SUVs have their strong points -a lower price and unique trims for the Kia Sportage and more space and features for the Hyundai Tuscon -but nothing beats a test drive and a talk with a well-informed salesperson.
So don’t be afraid to head to a Kia dealer to ask about the Sportage and a Hyundai dealer to find out what the Tuscon can do!
