Buying Tesla’s Extended Warranty Just Got Easier

Extended Warranty

Warranties come with every new vehicle. Like combustion engines, electric vehicles have
warranties for the powertrain and for the vehicle itself. But once these manufacturers’
warranties run out, many car owners turn to an extended warranty for added protection. Tesla
made it easy to get its extended warranty by making it available right through the mobile app.

The Extended Service Agreement

When Tesla owners of eligible Model S, Model X, Model Y, and Model 3 vehicles open their
Tesla app, they will have access to a Vehicle Extended Service Agreement. It starts when the
Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty Expires, and Tesla made it very easy to get. All customers need
to do is select the Add button, and they will have up to two years of extended warranty
coverage. The warranty is the same for all the eligible models, but the pricing varies depending
on the model. It ranges from $1,800 for the Model 3 to $3,500 for the Model X, with the Model
S coming in at $3,100 and the Model Y at $2,000. The agreement lasts for two years or 25,000
miles, whichever of these comes first.

Who Is Eligible?

In order to be eligible for the extended warranty, the customers need to purchase the vehicle
directly from Tesla. It’s also important to know that they have to purchase the Extended Service
Agreement no later than when their Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty expires. There is no grace
period. If you don’t act before the original warranty expires, you’ll be out of luck. But the app
also states that if you change your mind before it kicks in, you can cancel it and get your money
back.

If owners want to see if their vehicle is eligible, they can go to the Spec & Warranty tab on the
app and then go to Warranty.

So How Do Owners Get It?

Tesla made it very easy to access the upgrade. All owners need to do is open the app that they
probably already have downloaded on their phone, and then go to the Upgrades tab. Once
there, just select the Extended Service Agreement option. The app will then take them through
a series of prompts to complete the purchase, and the warranty is automatically added to their
account and will go into effect as soon as the original Basic Limited Warranty expires.
If the owner sells their Tesla before the extended service agreement expires, it can be
transferred to the new owner. Tesla, like many other manufacturers, makes this option
available to improve the aftermarket value.

What Does the Extended Warranty Cover?

This new warranty covers many things, but it does not cover everything. It’s basically an
extension of the original warranty. It will cover the repair or replacement of defective materials
or workmanship of most of the Tesla supplied parts throughout the coverage period. It does not
cover the high-voltage battery or the drive unit. These have their own warranty that lasts for
eight years.
