Do You Want a Tiny Car; Maybe if it’s a Convertible

02.07.16 - 2017 Smart ForTwo

Currently when see the Smart ForTwo driving around you might think the owner is a dork or someone who allows their desire to offer a smaller footprint for the planet take away their pleasure of driving a vehicle that can be more powerful and more fun to drive. While we know the choice to drive a Smart ForTwo is one of fuel mileage and space the car typically has not been an easy car to sell because of its dimensions, transmission and acceleration which are all below average in the automotive world.

For 2017 we are to be greeted with a brand new Smart ForTwo and so far the car appears to be one that will be much better than the previous model. Even with this upgraded model the stats are a hard sell at only 8.8 feet long and 89 horsepower most of the world will still opt for something larger and more powerful. As for the feeling of a car that was too tall and narrow, Smart has added four inches to the width in order to give us more space and show dimensions that seem to fit much better than before.

As for the convertible part, the new ForTwo will come in a Cabriolet built that has a droptop that is much more substantial than before. The roof can be raised or lowered electrically and the roof rails can be stored away in the trunk when removed. Most convertibles have a limit at which speed you can raise or lower the roof, but the ForTwo does not, although I would not recommend raising the top at the top speed of 96 mph, you might catch some wind with the top and find yourself replacing the item.

As for the roof of this little car it’s not a complete drop that you would experience in a sports car. The A and B-pillars remain intact while the top is able to move and lower within them. This actually gives the ForTwo a feeling of nostalgia and the look that is akin to the convertibles of old that had a top that lowered within the parameters of the structure of the vehicle. If you do drive with the roof up and in place you will notice the cabin is still fairly quiet, making it easy to listen to music or have a conversation.

You can easily enjoy a two-toned pain scheme on the ForTwo, which gives the car a look that is peppy and cool rather than muted and dull. This little car can give you a fun and funky style on the road and have others looking at your car not with the scorn they once did with the old ForTwo, but with the admiration and intrigue of a car that makes the perfect beach vehicle or a great city dweller that doesn’t need much space to park or to make a U-turn. Let the fun out and enjoy the new ForTwo, especially in the Cabriolet build, which gives this car a whole new personality.
