Could Chevy give the Camaro a fitting sendoff with a 2025 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 before this iconic muscle car drives off into the sunset?
The latest generation of the Camaro has proven itself to be one of the most incredible American muscle cars in history. Typically, muscle cars drive fast in a straight line but have difficulty turning fast laps because they lack the handling prowess of European sports cars. The sixth-generation Chevy Camaro changed all of that with the alpha platform which brings an in credit chassis, making this one of the best-handling muscle cars in the world.
Now that the Camaro is coming to an end, will we see a Z/28 version to send it of properly?
What would the right Z/28 package include?
If Chevy brings a final version Z/28 Camaro to the market for 2025, we expect it could include some impressive and unique hardware. To truly make this car a stand-out model, the 5.5-liter V8 engine from the Corvette C8 Z06 would be the perfect engine for this final Camaro. A manual transmission would be preferred, but its not a must for this incredible muscle car.
Another way a final sendoff model would make sense is to use some the same ethos built into the last Z/28 version. Chevy last made a Z/28 in 2014 and it was the most track-focused and lightest version of the car for that year. Strangely, the 2014 model wasn’t the fastest-sprinting Camaro, but it was great on the track, which would be a fitting finish to an amazing car.
In addition to being lighter than any other model, or at least better-handling than the rest, the 1LE handling package makes perfect sense for a new 2025 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. This car could have all the goodies to make it an amazing car to send off into the history books for good.
Should a new Z/28 Camaro be more radical than the previous version?
The 2014 Z/28 Camaro didn’t include an array of exterior differences that changed the driving manners and made it stand out like models of the past. A new Z/28 could take a few notes from the current ZL1 1LE and include everything in this package as standard fare. This would mean the new Z/28 would include:
- A larger front splitter
- Front dive planes
- Lighter carbon-fiber hood
- New lightweight wheels
- Removal of the fog lights
- A larger rear wing
- Additional lightweight features using carbon fiber
Every additional element should have one focus in this new Camaro; to improve track times and allow this car to rocket around test tracks at insane speeds. The Camaro ZL1 1LE took on Nürburgring and left many European automakers talking to themselves in disbelief, this new Z/28 with the Corvette Z06 engine could give some onlookers heart attacks at this legendary track.
Where can the Camaro save weight?
If part of the requirements for a new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is to make this car as light as possible, there are some areas where this car can save weight and improve speed. Some of these areas are:
- Battery – use a lightweight model
- Radio – take it out
- Seats – add Recaro racing seats
- Rear glass – can be made of thinner material
- Insulation – use less
- Air conditioning – remove it
- Fog lights – unnecessary
- Wheels – Add new lightweight models
These changes would create a Camaro that lacks the comfort and features most people want when they drive in traffic every day. This could mean a final version of the Z/28 Camaro is made only for the track, or Chevy could offer two versions, one for the road and the other for the track.
Could power be a problem for the Camaro?
Currently, the ZL1 Camaro utilizes a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that makes 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. This incredible power is impressive, which makes us wonder if the Corvette Z06 engine is necessary. Currently, the naturally aspirated 5.5-liter flat-plane V8 in the Corvette Z06 makes 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Would Chevy need to add a supercharger to the mix to increase the torque to a competitive level to make the Z/28 Camaro more desirable?
Is a new Z/28 Camaro in the works?
It’s hard to say whether Chevy intends to release a final Z/28 Camaro to give us a fitting sendoff for this car. We haven’t heard anything official from Chevrolet, but its easy to imagine just how much fun it would be to have a Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 with all the right features to drive fast and give this car the farewell it deserves.
