A recent investment in the Detroit area by FCA will bring more manufacturing to the area and allow more new Jeep vehicles to be built.
In order to meet the needs of FCA and the new 6,500 jobs that are being created, the Detroit governmental officials are working hard to build the programs needed to help ensure enough workers will have the skills needed to build the vehicles that are in the works for FCA, especially for the Jeep brand. This is a tall order and one that could help Detroit continue to return to its former glory.
FCA Can Help Detroit Come Full-Circle
At one time, the Detroit economy was one of the strongest in the world when the city was dominated by automotive manufacturing. There was a gradual migration from the metro area to suburbs and other areas, which caused the city to suffer the highest poverty and unemployment rates in the country.
As recently as 2013, Detroit had to file for bankruptcy and it would have been impossible for the city to create the job training programs that are now needed to help fill jobs that will be needed by FCA.
Thankfully, Detroit has been in recovery mode for a while now and has the ability to offer the necessary training programs to train the workforce for these new jobs. The city is working with two high schools and a community college to create training programs for the various positions in manufacturing, construction, information technology, and health care that will be needed.
FCA plans to have these new employees working at least two years before the first of the new models are rolled off the assembly line and will make it possible for these newly trained workers to put their training to good use.
Doubling the FCA Workforce in Detroit
Some of the jobs that will be available will be offered to current FCA workers who were recently laid-off or for those who have been working for the company on a temporary basis, but the overall FCA workforce in the Detroit area will double with this new wave of workers that will be hired and put to work by FCA in the area. The goal is to use this workforce to build the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and new three-row full-size Jeep SUVs that will be offered.
Will this Lead to More?
While the Jeep brand does need to have models in the three-row SUV class, the hope is that moving more manufacturing back to Detroit will help other companies choose to do the same thing. Whether or not more manufacturing jobs will be created with other companies is yet to be seen, but at least FCA is adding more to this area that was once the Mecca of automotive manufacturing in the US.
