If the Back to the Future movies, featuring the DeLorean time machine, had been filmed in San Antonio, TX, the scene would be much different.
Marty and Doc would have southern accents, and instead of a stainless steel sports car, we might have seen a truck play the part of the time machine. Even so, this city is the location of the company and where their new production plant will churn out new models for our driving pleasure. It’s time for us to go forward in time instead of trying to go back to the future.
The Future Dates Passed
The future dates of the Back to the Future movies are now in the past, and we still don’t have hoverboards or flying cars. What we do have is electric vehicles. The new DMC will ride on an EV platform, making it a more sustainable vehicle than its original model. The original version only lasted two years, which shouldn’t be much of a challenge for the new model. Thanks to the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act and the NHTSA finally getting off its hind end, up to 325 of these cars could make it to the roadways every year.
Changes Might Allow More
The platform for the new DeLorean models is already an upgrade over the previous one. This thought process takes us to the safety features. You see, the Low Volume Act allows automakers to build vintage vehicles and adhere to the safety standards of when that vehicle was in the market. This means the DMC-12 could use safety standards of the 1980s. If the company wants to build more of these vehicles, it will need to upgrade its safety features to modern standards. That makes us wonder if the plant in San Antonio, TX, can upgrade the DeLorean models this way.
How Has DeLorean Motor Company Survived?
A handful of the original cars are on the roads, and these cars need maintenance and repairs. When Stephen Wynne purchased the company in 1995, he also purchased as many of the original parts as he could get his hands on. With a stash of parts and a few cars that needed them, DMC became the world’s largest source for parts and repairs of the few models on the road. This gives Wynne an exclusive spot in the automotive market.
Not Only Electric But a Luxury Car
The teaser ad released before the Super Bowl gave us a look at the idea that the new DMC would be an electric car and a luxury model. The original car lacked anything that seemed like a luxury vehicle at all. With this in mind, it’s possible this new car could add more comfort and style to the cabin while maintaining its stainless steel body. Better yet, if the safety items are improved, the company could build this car in larger numbers than the limit set by the Low Vehicle Act.
The DeLorean Returns Soon
We expect the return of the DeLorean to be later this fall as it comes out of the San Antonio, TX plant. This car might be a low volume model because of missing safety items, it could be a luxury vehicle, but we know it’s going to be an electric vehicle. That is enough to tell us this is a car of the future and not one that has gone Back to the Future in any way.
